A Message from the Whiting City Council President

While the State's property tax plan is well intended, and helps all of our residents tremendously, there is one major flaw.  The plan simply cannot be a "one size fits all" solution.  As I said, it works perfectly for our residents and small businesses, and I am 100% in favor of this portion of the plan.  However, there is a profound, non-linear effect on our biggest tax payer ("Big Industry").  Because big industry occupies greater than 50% of our tax base, and they are grossly self under-assessed, they enjoy an enormously disproportionate and unfair advantage.  This unfair advantage, if left in place, will lead to the extinction of Whiting as we know it. The Mayor and his staff have done everything imaginable to reduce the cost of government in Whiting (staff reductions, efficiency improvements, massive budget cuts, etc.), but this does not even begin to address the dire situation. As President of the Whiting City Council, I plead with the Legislature, and the Governor, to understand the reality of the situation in Whiting and save us from extinction!
