As the legislative session winds to a close, I’m struck anew at just how wonderful this community is. Over 3,000 people have gone online in less than a week to demonstrate their support. Well over 1,000 signatures have been collected on postcards being delivered to State Rep Candeleria, who has taken our fight on in profound ways. We have been deluged with emails, phone calls and visits from well-wishers. It is precisely this spirit of community, this fierce sense of togetherness, that drew my bride and I to Whiting ten years ago. Our hopes to start a family in a place that valued community was what sold us.
Flash forward a decade and I discover my third grade daughter has—with her mother’s permission, but behind her father’s back—contributed her enthusiasm for Whiting on this website. She appears to be the second internet-savvy 8 year old contributing.
It was in discovering her short note that I understood my dreams for her are coming true. The reality she knows is one in which neighbors care for neighbors, where relationships are valued, where we hold one another in a sacred trust. Thank you to all who have contributed not only to this “Save Whiting” campaign, but also to each of you who daily makes this a place worth saving. We know that our efforts shall not be in vain.
Join us in supporting Mayor Joseph Stahura and State Rep. Reardon in their efforts to amend Indiana HB1001 in order to save the city of Whiting. This petition shows that Hoosiers across the state believe that the future of Whiting deserves the consideration of Indiana Lawmakers.
